Music Review: Dangal (Hindi)

Sarwar Khan and Sartaz Khan Barna elevate the folky Haanikaarak Bapu with their stupendous rendition. What makes the song though is Amitabh Bhattacharya's lyrics, hilariously detailing the extent of torture the kids experience at the hands of their father in the name of working out. Dhaakad, in two versions sung by Raftaar and Aamir Khan, is assembly-line hip-hop, serviceable at best. Idiot Banna doesn't offer much by way of new, but Nooran Sisters rock the rhythmic folk number with their energetic singing. The euphonious Naina is tailor-made for Arijit Singh's soft vocals and the man predictably does a terrific job of it. Jonita Gandhi, who broke out in Bollywood earlier this year with The Breakup Song, is marvellous in Gilehriyaan, a gorgeously ethereal melody, while Daler Mahendi delivers an impactful vocal performance of the anthemic title song. Pritam caps off 2016 on a memorable note with Dangal.
