Music Review: Vaazhl (Tamil)
Composer(s): Kalyani Nair, Pradeep Kumar

Like Pagglait, Vaazhl is a soundtrack that's packed with a diverse set of genres, filled to the brim with beautiful and soaring melodies, angelic backing instrumentals, and satisfying vocal harmonies. Aaha is five minutes of atmospheric, pillowy goodness that coasts along a tidal wave of smooth, jazz-like tones (Also is this the first time I am hearing theremin incorporated in a Tamil song? Carolina Eyck does wonders, as always!). Mudhal Darisanam is bedecked by konnakol and an assorted sprinkle of nadaswaram and thavil, before the tune is accompanied by an additional layer of acoustic guitar. Composer Deva lands yet another convention-breaching track in Feel Song, and Pudhu Vidha Anubavam has Pradeep Kumar and Kalyani Nair leading the tasteful ballad (that tabla!), as it makes way for a stunner of a serene melody, Semmaan Magalai, that glides along an uplifting choir. If Vaazha Vaa is an eclectic assemblage of electric guitars and moody electronic production, Kalyani Nair unleashes an experimental theme track, complete with brass elements and drum programming, that builds slowly but steadily into a triumphal, anthemic hook. The closer Naan is symphonic and sweeping, and laid over tunefully layered guitar strums and handclapped grooves. Pradeep Kumar's Vaazhl is a wonderfully bracing, forward-facing melting pot.
