Music Review: Bhoomi (Tamil)
Composer(s): D. Imman

When it's D. Imman in charge of music, one pretty much knows how it's going to play out. And Bhoomi doesn't break that pattern. After all, why fix something that isn't broken? The tunes are predictable, some of which are pleasant like in the case of Kadai Kannaaley, which benefits immensely from Shreya Ghoshal's singing. But elsewhere, production missteps hamper what could have been otherwise interesting updates to his rustic-flavoured formula. Tamizhan Endru Sollada, for instance, is better served by a different singer other than Anirudh to match its energetic arrangements, while jarring rap interludes from Yogi B don't add much of value to Uzhavaa despite its anthemic guitar-leaning soundbed. Achamillai Achamillai goes for the folk jugular but with forgettable results, but Vande Mataram works admirably well in Ananya Bhat and Malaysian singer Sabesh Manmathan's impactful vocals. The instrumental Crucial Beats is another highpoint, with Imman dishing out a frenetic percussive fare that blends synthetic beats and chenda melam to fantastic effect. D. Imman opens 2021 with a passable Bhoomi.
