Propped by three different composers, Abhishek Arora, Anuj Garg and Shantanu Moitra, Gulabo Sitabo is an out-and-out traditional fare that's a bright, layered mishmash of Indian folk sounds. Arora's Jootam Phenk has a spring in its beats that makes it at once catchy, while Garg's lilting Madari Ka Bandar unfolds at a languid pace only to switch gears halfway through, resulting in a heady, enlivening track.

Shantanu Moitra ropes in a lively-sounding Mika Singh to croon the peppy, if commonplace, Kanjoos, but in the reflective Kya Leke Aayo Jagme, he crafts an arresting kanjira-driven folky melody that gains immensely from Vinod Dubey's singing. The Gulabo Sitabo Theme instrumental is no exception, working extremely well as a gorgeous collision of gubguba, manjira and tabla.

Budhau, sung by Bhanwari Devi and Bobby Cash, appears in two versions, its richly textured guitar sounds becoming a launchpad for a country-tinged ballad that's swapped for a retro-ish bouncy soundbed in the second variant featuring a contagious blend of banjo, congas and trumpets that Garg assembles together so well.

The album's cornerstone, Do Din Ka Ye Mela, gets a two version treatment too, with singers Tochi Raina and Rahul Ram acing the groovy rock-leaning piece. As much as Garg's melodic tune is phenomenal on its own, his choice of rhythmic drums coupled with Ankur Mukharjee's electric guitars in the interludes takes the composition to a whole new level. At a time Bollywood music is dominated by mindless remixes, Gulabo Sitabo comes as a breath of fresh air.
