Heavy Rotation: Harris Jayaraj
A list of some of my favourite compositions from Harris Jayaraj...
Yethi Yethi (Vaaranam Aayiram), Nangaai (Engeyum Kadhal) - The inescapable Michael Jackson touches aside, both Yethi Yethi and Nangaai are characterised by a manic rhythm, gripping the listener from start to finish.
Asku Laska (Nanban) - An intoxicating melody from Harris Jayaraj, and to top it all, a flawless rendition from Vijay Prakash and Chinmayi.
Yellae Lama (7aum Arivu) - Vijay Prakash once again making me realise how much I love his voice!
Oh Mama Mama, Ivan Yaaro, Vaseegara, Azhagiya Theeye, Poopol Poopol (Minnale) - Harris Jayaraj's acclaimed debut and still remains one of his best works to date. Minnale is stacked with songs that evoke the giddiness of falling in love (Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Ivan Yaaro). Dil Ko Tumse, which Jayaraj would go on to reuse in Kaakha Kaakha as Ondra Renda, plays out like a gentle acoustic breeze, while Venmathi Venmathiye Nillu is delivered by Tippu with such vividness that it drives home the pangs of first heartbreak. The passionate love ballad that's Vaseegara hits hard and is the album's centrepiece, distilling the language of pining and turning it into a soulful declaration of love. Oh Mama Mama reeks of Rahman's Columbus, but the song is addictive regardless, in part to Shankar Mahadevan and Tippu's rollicking rendition.
Yaaro Manathile (Dhaam Dhoom), Unakkul Naane (Pachaikili Muthucharam), Suttum Vizhi (Ghajini), Chellame Chellame (Satyam), Ondra Renda (Kaakha Kaakha) - Bombay Jayashri has sung number of songs for Harris Jayaraj starting with Vaseegara, but Yaaro... is my absolute favourite followed by Suttum Vizhi.
Manjal Veyil, Uyirile, Partha Mudhal, Neruppe, Karka Karka (Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu) - Manjal Veyil is the very definition of a catchy pop song, made even more beautiful by Hariharan's top-notch singing. And you know what, I love this film to bits!
Poove Vai Pesum (12B) - Mahalakshmi Iyer is simply marvellous in this tambourine-based romantic ballad.
Yedho Ondru (Lesa Lesa) - A lilting duet, sung wonderfully by Harish Raghavendra and Srilekha Parthasarathy.
Enadhuyire (Bheemaa) - Chinmayi, Sadhana Sargam, Sowmya Raoh and Nikhil Mathew come together for this delectable Rahman'ish melody that recalls to mind Munbe Vaa and Mayiliragae.
Nenje Nenje (Ayan), Mudhal Kanave (Majunu), Aagaya Suriyanai (Samurai), Mughalai Mughalai (Arasatchi), Anbe En Anbe (Dhaam Dhoom), Nenjil Nenjil (Engeyum Kadhal), Anbae Anbae (Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal) - The collaboration between Harris and Harish Raghavendra sure yielded quite a lot of memorable melodies, I must say.
Annal Mele Panithuli, Adiye Kolluthe, Nenjukkul Peidhidum, Mundhinam Parthene, Ragasiyam (Vaaranam Aayiram) - Annal Mele is easily one of the finest compositions from Harris Jayaraj thus far, and Carnatic exponent Sudha Ragunathan stuns as usual.
Pada Pada Pattamboochi (Majunu), O Sukumari (Anniyan) - Shankar Mahadevan — need I say more?
Mudhal Mazhai, Ragasiya Kanavugal (Bheemaa), Pudichirukku (Saamy), Iyengaaru Veetu (Anniyan) - No matter how many singers turn up, I will always have a soft spot for Hariharan for the heart and soul he brings to the table.
Uyirin Uyirae (Kaakha Kaakha), Kadhalikkum (Chellamae) - Peppy tunes bolstered by K.K.'s punchy rendition.
Karu Karu, Kaadhal Konjam (Pachaikili Muthucharam), Oru Maalai (Ghajini), Unnale Unnale, June Pona (Unnale Unnale), Thee Illai (Engeyum Kadhal), Kanavugal (Ullam Ketkumae) - If I would want a bunch of singers in India to start a boy band, it would have to be Karthik, Krish, Naresh Iyer and Devan Ekambaram. Breezy is the word!
Oru Nadhi (Samurai) - After Bombay Jayashri and Sudha Ragunathan, it's the turn of Nithyasree Mahadevan, who mesmerises in this west-meet-classical fusion adeptly tuned by Harris Jayaraj.
Patthu Viral (Arul) - While Oddiyaanam sung by Hariharan and Srimathumitha is no doubt a crowd-pleaser, Patthu Viral is a lilting melody bedecked by tasteful instrumentation, and excellently led by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Swarnalatha. Also one of the few songs sung by SPB for Harris.
Ennai Konjam (Kaakha Kaakha), Moongil Kaadugale (Samurai), Mudhal Mudhalai, Lesa Lesa (Lesa Lesa), Idhuthaanaa (Saamy), Un Sirippinil (Pachaikili Muthucharam), Rahathulla (Ghajini), Puyalae Puyalae (Kovil), Oyaayiye Yaayiye (Ayan), Enamo Aedho (Ko) - Uniformly gorgeous melodies from Harris Jayaraj that make large statements through tiny tweaks to his typical style of melody and beat, giving the tracks a new dimension.
Yethi Yethi (Vaaranam Aayiram), Nangaai (Engeyum Kadhal) - The inescapable Michael Jackson touches aside, both Yethi Yethi and Nangaai are characterised by a manic rhythm, gripping the listener from start to finish.
