Heavy Rotation: Yuvan Shankar Raja (Part I)

Revisiting the best of Yuvan Shankar Raja...

Thuli Thuli, En Kadhal Solla, Suthuthe Suthuthe Bhoomi, Poongatre Poongatre, Adada Mazhaida (Paiyaa) - If there is one massy album from the Raja junior, it's Paiyaa. A complete package filled to the brim with dulcet melodies and foot-tapping folk numbers, catchy doesn't even begin to describe it.

Iru Kangal (Kadhal Samrajyam) - The movie may have never seen the light of the day, but this Balram-sung intoxicating melody is marvelously sublime.

Chudithar Aninthu, Poovae (Poovellam Kettuppar) - Yuvan's breakout hit featuring Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam and Nithyasree Mahadevan. Need you ask more?

Sanjaram Seiyyum (Kannamoochi Yenada) - A melody like no other, fabulous and mesmerising in Shankar Mahadevan and Madhushree's superb rendition.

Idhu Varai (Goa) - Easily one of the best melodies from Yuvan, right up there along with Aaha Kaadhal and Idhayam, and led flawlessly by Andrea Jeremiah and Ajesh Ashok.

Pani Thuli (Kanda Naal Mudhal) - K.K. and Shreya Ghoshal rule this beautiful composition from Yuvan.

Anukoneledhuga (Panjaa) - The tune is a little evocative of Paiyaa's En Kadhal Solla, but a splendorous melody riding on a rhythmic synth-laden arrangement that gains immensely from Belly Raj and Priya Hemesh.

Anukoledenadu (Oye!) - A folk-inflected electronic melody that taps into a breezy soundbed from an amalgamation of simple components, including strummed guitar, catchy percussion, and vocals from Shreya Ghoshal and Shweta Pandit.

Kannan Varum Velai (Deepavali) - Quite an arresting folk fusion in Anuradha Sriram and Madhushree's captivating vocals.

Aaha Kaadhal Konji Pesudhe (Moondru Per Moondru Kaadhal) - Yuvan's best thus far, if you were to ask me. And Nandini Srikar totally owns this gorgeous semi-classical melody!

Uyirin Maeloru Uyirvandhu (Vadacurry) - Utterly delightful Ilaiyaraaja'esque melody backed by phenomenal singing from Sathyan and Priya Hemesh.
