Heavy Rotation: Yuvan Shankar Raja (Part II)

I have been listening to a lot of Yuvan Shankar Raja this past week, and so here it is, a continuing exploration of his music...

Oru Thuli Vishamai (Ameerin Aadhi Bhagavan) - Shreya Ghoshal and Sharib Sabri carry this spectacular semi-classical composition in style.

En Anbae En Anbae (Mounam Pesiyadhe), Kathal Website Ondru (Dheena), Saroja Saman Nikalo (Chennai 600028), Vethalaiya Potendi (Billa), Kaatru Enbatha (Perazhagan), Merke Merke (Kanda Naal Mudhal) - Where Yuvan matches Shankar Mahadevan's manic energy and versatility.

Mun Paniyaa (Nandha), Yaaro (Chennai 600028), Eera Nila (Aravindhan) - S.P.B. and Ilaiyaraaja are a hit combination, sure, but he has sung some phenomenal songs for Yuvan too, Mun Paniyaa in particular is first-rate. So is Eera Nila, from his composing debut Aravindhan in 1996, which is so Raja-like and heavenly.

Kadhal Mattum Purivathillai (Kaadhal Kondein), Dhavanipotta Deepavali, Kadhal Vaithu (Deepavali), Valaiyal Karangalai (Thottal Poo Malarum), Enna Enna Aagiraen (Kaadhal Solla Vandhen) - If it's S.P.B. for Ilaiyaraaja, it's Vijay Yesudas for Yuvan. The combo rocks!

Devathaiyai Kandaen, Thottu Thottu, Nenjodu (Kaadhal Kondein), Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthal, Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal, Kan Pesum Varthaigal (7G Rainbow Colony), Theenda Theenda (Thulluvadho Ilamai), Oru Naalil (Pudhupettai), Allanta Doorala (Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule), Oru Naalaikkul (Yaaradi Nee Mohini) - It goes without saying that director Selvaraghavan extracted the best out of Yuvan. My God, what compositions!

Nee Illai Endraal (Dheena) - Vaali's lyrics, Bhavatharini and Murugan M. Iyer's vocals, and Yuvan's heady beats take this captivating song to the next level.

Malargale (Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan) - Bombay Jayashri. Enough said.

Konjam Konjam, Theepidika (Arinthum Ariyamalum) - Theepidika is without doubt stylish and catchy, but Konjam Konjam's accordion-soaked whispery melody sung by Mahua Kamat is simply mind-blowing.

Boom Boom, Aarariraro (Raam) - Boom Boom is addictive hip-hop, while K. J. Yesudas sings a heartfelt lullaby in Aarariraro, which might as well be Amma Endru Azhaikatha 2.0!

Iragai Pole (Naan Mahaan Alla), Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (Siva Manasula Sakthi), Pogadhey (Deepavali), Thaakkuthe Kann Thaakkuthe (Baana Kaathadi), En Kannodu (Arinthum Ariyamalum) - Auto-tuned yes, but Yuvan's vocals suit these songs to a tee, don't you agree?

Vennila Veliye (Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga), Sollamal Thottu (Dheena), Irava Pagala (Poovellam Kettuppar), Vaa Vaa Poove Vaa (Rishi), En Isaikku (Popcarn), Oyvedu Nilave (Velai), Thaaliyae Thevaiyillai (Thaamirabharani), Adada En Meethu (Pathinaaru) - Gorgeous romantic ballads in Hariharan's gossamer vocals. Vaa Vaa Poove Vaa also happens to be the only song S. Janaki sang for Yuvan.

Va Va Nilava Pudichi (Naan Mahaan Alla) - Yuvan ropes in Thuli Thuli singer Haricharan Seshadri for an ultra-rhythmic folky melody.

Dosth Bada Dosth (Saroja), Megam Megam (Kannamoochi Yenada), Arabu Naade (Thottal Poo Malarum), Ottraikannale (Vel), Yaar Intha Penthan (Boss Engira Bhaskaran), Poga Poga Boomi (Pattiyal), Rasathi (Avan Ivan), Enthan Vaanamum Neethan (Vaazhthugal), Nuvvena (Raam) - The ever dependable Haricharan acing the songs like only he can!

Aedho Saigirai (Vaamanan), Siragugal (Sarvam), Oru Maalai Neram (Naan Mahaan Alla), Chinnan Sirusu (Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum) - Aedho... is a lovely melody, no two ways about it, but Yuvan makes a style hopping statement with the heady folk piece Chinnan Sirusu that Javed Ali handles with finesse.

Theendi Theendi (Bala), Poove Poove (Ullam) - Unnikrishnan's enchanting vocals makes all the difference, with Yuvan beautifully complementing on the arrangements. Poove Poove, from Ullam, in particular is a standout.

Manmadhane Nee (Manmadhan), Eno Kangal (Kalvanin Kadhali), Yeh Nenje (April Maadhathil), Manja Kaattu Maina (Manadhai Thirudivittai) - I cannot get over how soothing is Sadhana Sargam's voice.

En Jannal Vandha (Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai) - A funky medley that flits from dulcet melody to groovy pop to traditional folk in what's a well-packaged multi-genre mashup.

Singara Kanna Ennai (Junior Senior) - Yuvan gives his own spin of Rahman's Azhagana Ratchashiyae, and the result is a seductive slow-burn of a melody.

Chal Chal Re, Happy (Happy) - Peppy, chartbusting tunes from Yuvan's acclaimed Telugu debut.

Sight Adippom (April Maadhathil), Raagangal Pathinaaru (Thillu Mullu) - Karthik doing what he does best, but Sight Adippom is Yuvan's Kaasumela moment, with actor Silambarasan delivering a peppy rendition of the exuberant folk piece.

Vaanam Thoovum (Punnagai Poove), Kadhal Enbathu (Oru Kalluriyin Kathai) - Yuvan-meets-Harish Raghavendra, who brings his trademark soul to the pretty, dulcet melodies.

Others worth a mention: Machaan Machaan (Silambattam), Natpin Kathaigalai (Kadhal 2 Kalyanam), Para Para Pattaampoochi (Kattradhu Thamizh), Yogi Theme In Saarangi (Yogi), Aanandha Yaazhai, Nathivellam (Thanga Meenkal), Vaitha Kann, Nijama Nijama (Bose), Vennelalo (Malli Malli Choodali), Mercury Poove (Pudhiya Geethai), Iayyayo (Paruthiveeran), Azhagana Neeyum (Muthirai), Poovaitha Poovil (Popcarn), Sol Pechu (Thillalangadi), Chinna Chinnathai (Mounam Pesiyadhe), Kadhal Valarthen (Manmadhan), Mudhal Mudhalaga (Aethirree), Mudhal Murai (Winner), Vinodhane (Thennavan), Oviya (Kurumbu)
