Music Review: Jilla (Tamil)

Composer(s): D. Imman
Film: Jilla

Backed by chenda melam, Pattu Onnu rides pretty much on the exuberant vocals of S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and Shankar Mahadevan. Imman himself goes behind the mic for the tuneful Verasa Pogayile. His voice proves to be an apt fit, and the violin-laden orchestration makes it a very appealing listen. Jingunamani's folksy percussion has that distinctive Imman flavor, and sees Sunidhi Chauhan and K. G. Ranjith delivering their parts well. The theme song, its punchy lyrics aside, courses along with an uptempo techno-traditional mix and is adequately racy. It's by now usual practice to get Vijay to sing one track in the album, and while Jilla too isn't an exception, what's different is that the actor gets to sing a melody this time. Joined by Shreya Ghoshal, Kandaangi Kandaangi is an ear-pleasing romantic duet complete with the composer's trademark touches. Yeppa Maama Treatu? is perhaps the only real downer, the song losing steam right from the very start. Imman, who opened his innings in the film industry with Vijay's Thamizhan (excluding Kadhale Swasam), delivers a neat mix of mass and class.
