Movie Review: Drishyam (Malayalam)

As it turns out, Drishyam is my first Malayalam movie in two years. But that's besides the point. Because what matters is that the film, written and directed by Jeethu Joseph, is a gripping domestic thriller that surprises at every twist and turn. As a story about Georgekutty (Mohanlal), a self-made cable channel operator in a picturesque village miles away from Thodupuzha who is informed by the visuals he watches on TV and willing to go to any lengths to protect his family, Drishyam is quite a beguiling watch.

"Visuals can be deceiving", so goes the movie's tagline, and appositely the plot, which begins on a heartwarming, familial note, transmogrifies into a fantastic cerebral suspenser that paves the way for a stunning denouement. Jeethu Joseph's storytelling is so exceptional and intricate, it makes you see everything that you have witnessed before (especially those in the first half) in an entirely new light. Entertaining and thrilling in equal measure, Drishyam is a visual spectacle that shouldn't be missed for no reason. It gives a whole new meaning to what's right and what's wrong.
