Book Review: The Birthday Weekend

A reunion of friends unlocks old grudges and unpleasant truths in Lesley Sanderson's twisted-if-familiar psychological thriller. Louise, along with her close knit group of friends form college, are invited to their friend Amy's birthday weekend in a cottage next to the woods near their old university campus, where coincidentally another friend of theirs, Hannah, vanished 15 years go. But as the group convenes and the party progresses, a game of truth or dare lets loose a barrage of revelations, leading them to question the events leading to Hannah's mysterious disappearance. After a slow start, Sanderson keeps the momentum going, and colours its predictable storyline with a slew of twists and turns, even as its multiple threads coalesce in a satisfying, but rushed, conclusion, and the narrative design becomes clear.
