Book Review: The Search Party

The mysterious disappearance of teenager Sadie Saunders sparks a massive search by the local law enforcement headed by detective Robin Fleet. With no clues as to her whereabouts and days trickling by, five of her best friends form their own search party, packing their bags and setting off to the woods where Sadie was last seen. Soon enough, what starts off as a search devolves into something far more sinister when one of them ends up getting fatally stabbed, leading Fleet to sift through their lies and coverups to arrive at the truth. The classic trope of "there's more to the story than what meets the eye" has been employed several times before, and Lelic, despite the plot's unoriginal premise, delivers a competent thriller that alternates through the teenagers' interviews with the police, as well as from Fleet's perspective. The Search Party breaks no new ground, but what it does, it does well. Veteran readers of the genre may want to sit out this one.
