Heavy Rotation: Rachita Arora, Sachin Balu, Sushin Shyam & More

Dharala Prabhu (a remake of the 2012 Hindi film Vicky Donor) has eight tracks from eight composers — Anirudh Ravichander (who reuses his own tune from Gang Leader for the title track), Sean Roldan, Vivek-Mervin, Inno Genga, Madley Blues, Bharath Shankar, Kaber Vasuki and Oorka! A record by Tamil film music standards, no less. It's unfortunate, then, some parts of the record float by without registering much of an impression. But the highlights — Aaha Ooho, Payanangal, Unnaal Penne — somehow make up for this.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's latest effort Plan Panni Pannanum is weighed down with its all-too-familiar tropes — Kanave Urave comes with all the signature Yuvan elements that's reminiscent of Kan Pesum Varthaigal — but in Allola Kallolam, he crafts a stunner of a folky melody aided by Ramya Nambeesan's emotive singing.

Sachin Balu, for his part, concocts a wall of immersive melodies (Kannaram Pothi is a stunner all the way) in Bhoomiyile Manohara Swakaryam that's equal parts charming and lilting, led by an army of talented singers including Shahabaz Aman, Sithara Krishnakumar, Vijay Yesudas, Mridula Warrier and Devadutt Bijibal.

But it's Sushin Shyam, who, in his inimitable style, wins over with a breezy, fluttering piece in Kannil (Kappela), aided by spectacular singing from Sooraj Santhosh and Shweta Mohan. Sithara Krishnakumar shows up too, in Kadukumanikkoru Kannundu, bringing her A-game to the short, but crisp, folk tune, while Avani's breathy croon embellish the euphonious piece Dooram Thedum Neram.

Here's a quick roundup of some of my favourites from Arindom (Love Aaj Kal Porshu - Shune Ne), Rachita Arora (Har Kisse Ke Hisse Kaamyaab - Paaon Bhaari), Midhun Mukundan (Mayabazar 2016 - Neenyaaro), Nobin Paul (Bill Gates - Aridhe Hanatheyu), J. Anoop Seelin (Inspector Vikram - Nannavale Nannavale), Bijibal (Kozhipporu - Aadyathe Nokkil)...

... and some more from Binu Chathanoor (Oru Vadakkan Pennu - Kili Maine), Ganesh Raghavendra (Asuraguru - Villadhi Villi), Jubin (Draupathi - Kukukukku), Achu Rajamani (Velvet Nagaram - Chinnanchiru Kiliye), and Raghu Kunche (Palasa 1978 - O Sogasari)...
