Book Review: The Mist

Ragnar Jónasson thrills and chills by the dozen in his masterfully plotted and paced slice of Nordic noir The Mist. The third and final book in the exceptional Hidden Iceland trilogy featuring Reykjavík Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir is a nightmarish tour de force from start to finish, a terrifying take on claustrophobia and isolation, that alternates between events surrounding the mysterious disappearance of a young girl in early 1988 and a snowy day right around Christmas the previous year, while simultaneously ratcheting up the domestic tension in Hulda's own life, culminating in a traumatic catastrophe that effortlessly dovetails with the series' inventive, chronologically backwards narrative design. Ragnar Jónasson officially joins the ranks of Arnaldur Indriðason and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir with this atmospheric, spine-chilling psycholgical mystery. Can't wait to see what he does next!
