Tech Brief: Apple Store Online Launches in India on September 23

Apple has announced that it's bringing the company's online storefront officially to India on September 23, allowing customers to buy its full range of products in the country ahead of the Dussehra-Diwali festive season that kicks off next month.

The online store was a long time coming, with CEO Tim Cook confirming the plans earlier this February. That's not all. Apple is also in the midst of opening its first physical retail stores in India sometime next year in the cities of Mumbai and Bengaluru.

"The iPhone maker's first physical store will open next year in the plush Mumbai neighbourhood of BKC, while [...] it's already scouted nearly half a million square feet of space right in the heart of Bangalore near Minsk Square, named after its sister city in Belarus," Bloomberg reported last month.

The move comes after India relaxed its previous rules on foreign investment last August that forced companies like Apple to source 30% of production locally, blocking the iPhone maker from opening stores and selling devices directly to consumers, and instead rely on third-party retailers to sell its devices.

Update on Sept. 23: The Apple online store is now officially live, marking the first time the company has sold its products directly to consumers after more than 20 years of operations in the country.
