Facebook Becomes Facebook Again

Remember the early days of Facebook? 16 years ago, the social network started in Harvard as an online version of "face book," a college-only student directory featuring photos and personal information, before it took off and sealed Orkut's fate.

Now, the social media behemoth is getting back to its roots with a new feature called Campus, which offers college students a private place to connect with classmates, join groups, discover upcoming campus events, get updates from their school's administration and chat with other students from their dorm, clubs or any other campus group.

Campus requires a university email address (@.edu) to join and will reside within a dedicated section of the Facebook app. Built along the lines of Workplace and Dating, the latest diversification from Facebook is another attempt to appeal to the younger demographic, who have shifted their attention to other platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram.

"People who sign up for Campus and are part of your college community will be able to see your Campus profile and the content you post in Campus," the company said, although the Campus profiles will live separately from the users' public Facebook profiles, not to mention it's completely opt-in.

As The Verge pointed out yesterday, it appears stasis is never an option with Facebook. To quote Instagram's chief Adam Mosseri: "When you're as large as we are, competition is always a risk. But an even bigger issue is that what you do becomes irrelevant."
