Book Review: Some Choose Darkness

After having picked up The Suicide House, it was a given I was going to read the start of what's become a promising series featuring Rory Moore and her partner and criminal profiler Lane Phillips. "Some choose darkness, others are chosen by it," so goes a line in Donlea's compelling thriller about murder and the obsession with finding the truth that puts his quirky protagonist through the wringer as she begins to reconstruct a 40-year-old serial-killer case, little realising what she's about to uncover could upend her life forever. Alternating between events in 1979 and 2019, Donlea's compassionate portrayal of two highly intelligent, tormented women facing unprecedented circumstances intricately weaves multiple, complex plotlines before bringing them to a cohesive finish.
