Music Review: David (Tamil)
Vaazhkaye (The Theme of David), as the name suggests, is the theme song and is characterized by a dark brooding feel that's nicely complemented by a techno-trance style music from Bramfatura. Singer Siddarth Basrur does complete justice to the song as well. Vikram steps in as a singer along with composer Remo Fernandes in the breezy Goan musical Maria Pitache, although the actor does a middling job. Kanave Kanave (Anirudh Ravichander) is a straight rehash of his own Kannazhaga (3); the flute and the arrangements itself strongly evocative of his debut offering. Prashant Pillai's Mannamey is immensely catchy; the percussion by Tao Issaro being the standout feature. Karthik as usual handles his part with finesse. The dubstep version of Mannamey (remixed by Dub Sharma) capitulates on the original's 'catchiness' to fantastic results.
Pillai's other track Iruvanil Ullavavaa is so pleasing to the ear and it helps that it's sung by Naresh Iyer and Shweta Pandit (who also debuts as an actress in the film). Maati Baani's Theerathu Poga Poga Vaanam, sung by Nirali Karthik and Joyshanti, is an uptempo Tamil French mix and the classical touch works wonders! Sanjeev Thomas, on the other hand, is super energetic in Modern Mafia's punk rock Machi, a genre relatively unexplored in Tamil. Light House Symphony (Remo Fernandes) begins on a tranquil note before assuming an interesting medley of sounds as it races towards the finish. All said, David is perhaps the most non-filmy soundtrack for a Tamil film and breaks all norms. Music in 2013 has set off to a rollicking start!
