Music Review: Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (Tamil)

Composer(s): Anirudh Ravichander

Beyond the obvious nod to Pani Da Rang, Anirudh does well couching the guitary Thangamey in a beautiful violin-esque orchestration, and the twist to heavy rock in the end makes it all the more enjoyable. Neeti Mohan does a fantastic job alongside Anirudh in Neeyum Naanum, a Sonnalum-like (Kadhal Virus, A. R. Rahman) slow-burner of a romantic melody that gets superb purchase in the tune's lovely arrangements incorporating kanjira, sarangi and strings. Benny Dayal gives the jazzy and hilarious title (cum hero rowdy intro) song a stylish makeover, while Sid Sriram aces the soothing Yennai Maatrum Kadhale, with the outro neatly segueing into the former's naanum rowdy dhaan hook. The terrific country folk number Kannaana Kanne closes the soundtrack on a high, even as Sean Roldan hits all the right notes with his top-notch singing. After what seemed like eternity, Anirudh Ravichander impresses with a refreshing Naanum Rowdy Dhaan!

Update: There's a sixth song Varavaa Varavaa, which is mostly background material, not to mention, utterly forgettable.
