Music Review: Kaliyachan (Malayalam)

Composer(s): Bijibal
Listen to the songs online here: Saavn

Sung beautifully by Ram Mohan, Lolapeethambara (a devotional piece on Kṛṣṇa), Kettunna Veshathine (about getting ready for a kathakali performance and pleasing the guru), Porumee Pazhkali (nostalgia), Smeram Guruvin (about going against your guru) and Thaavithulumbum Sabha (an arangetram), are short, traditional classical compositions, but utterly captivating. Porumee especially is almost Rahman-like! Vipin Lal-sung Manjil Kulichu is no exception, its lovely melody soaked against a backdrop of idakka and cymbals (elathalam).

Appositely fiery but way too short (0:25s), Ucchanda Garvam (arrogance) rides on K. J. Chakrapani's impactful rendition, while P. Jayachandran and Bijibal deliver as is expected in the plaintive Paapaleela Lolanaavan and Andhakarathil Kalikazhinju (downfall) respectively. Of the remaining three classical tunes sung by Bijibal, Damippippoo Nee (about the river Bharathapuzha) and Harinakshi Janamoule are earthy and mellifluous, and in the minimal Mounashilpam Kalikoppu, he evokes memories of Raveendran mashu's Vaarmukile (same raga?). Kaliyachan is perhaps eclectic, but is one of the best soundtracks I have heard this year.
