Music Review: Jawan (Hindi)

There is no denying the fact that Anirudh Ravichander has the pulse of the current generation of music listeners, expertly mining the electronic terrain to craft eminently listenable, if fleetingly enjoyable, pop. But as with the recent Jailer and now Jawan, the soundtracks are precision-engineered for the widest-possible appeal, often at the risk of sounding one-note and without any of the recall value. Viewed in that light, Ravichander's latest outing, also his Bollywood debut, is a middling affair. He makes a couple of half-hearted attempts at tweaking and updating his formula. But these attempts remain listless and boring, like on autopilot. Chaleya, for all its breeziness, is a retread of his earlier works. The lone standout in Pattasa, the Tamil version of Faraatta, that fuses the best elements from Private Party (Don) and Devi Sri Prasad's Kattu Kattu (Thirupaachi), with Nakash Aziz, Jonita Gandhi and rapper Arivu cooking up a fun folky melody.
