Sid Sriram fabulously leads Othapana Kaatteri in his inimitable style, even as composer D. Imman adorns the melody with his trademark flourishes that offers a throwback to his earlier works. Anney Yaaranney (and its Reprise version) works as a lovely crossover of Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan's sensibilities (remember Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthal from 7G Rainbow Colony?), with Shreya Ghoshal lending her saccharine sweet vocals to the captivating folk piece, while Deivam Neethaaney's classical flourishes find their perfect purchase in Pavithra Chari's phenomenal rendition. Carnatic music exponent Nithyasree Mahadevan shows off her exceptional vocal range in the spirited percussive-heavy, festive-themed Karambakudi Kanaga, and in the album closer Yenge Yen Ponmaalai, singer Arya Dhayal's haunting, melancholic singing takes centre-stage in a pensive track that otherwise carries an all too familiar sound. Udanpirappe very much sticks to Imman's quintessential template, and it works. After all why fix something that isn't broken?
