D. Imman finally does something different in Iva Yen Aalu, crafting a breezy synth-laced melody that Sanjith Hegde renders in his trademark style. And damn is that hook catchy! Bengaluru-based engineer-turned-singer Joewin Shamalina shines in the zingy electronic track Pickup Breakup Patchup, while Sid Sriram rules the pathos-tinged Oru Naal. Imman, for his part, keeps it consistently engaging with an uncoventional mix of kazoo and dubstep flourishes that recalls to mind Jakes Bejoy's Maate Vinadhuga. Intrigue and mystery are sprinkled over The Dark Hour, and the brooding instrumental works well as a feverish blend of clarinet, strings and thumping beats. Ashwin Sharma, with a voice almost resembling Shankar Mahadevan, delivers the soundtrack's best — Yaarovai — a splendorous semi-classical fusion which gains from Nathan's sax and Keba Jeremiah's guitars. Angelina is D. Imman's best in a long, long time. And the fact that he dabbles in a totally different soundscape elevates it every bit.
