Listen: Jai Paul's "Str8 Outta Mumbai"
I know I shared this very song before, but it's all getting a little too irresistible to not make a note of it again. For Jai Raj Paul's Str8 Outta Mumbai, from his leaked demo/debut album Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones), is funky as it's groovy, an eclectic fusion of electronic elements and Indian percussion that takes its inspiration from sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar's — also father of American singer-pianist Norah Jones, in case you missed the connection — iconic score for the 1979 Bollywood film Meera. Sampling the track Baala Main Bairaagan Hoongi sung by Vani Jairam, Jai Paul crafts a compelling soundscape that blends her vocals against catchy guitar riffs, dholaks, and synth clangs. Give it an earful below, along with Punctual's super-rhythmic Eva -
