Music Review: Sandakozhi 2 (Tamil)

Yuvan Shankar Raja, coming off a hattrick high, is back again with a soundtrack steeped in traditional folk sounds, and the results are mighty catchy and refreshing. Kambathu Ponnu works very well as a bouncy EDM-folk hybrid, aided superbly by a groovy arrangement, even if it's let down by Yuvan's spotty singing. Mahalingam's pitch-perfect rendition goes hand in hand with the manic percussion-heavy Meesa Vecha Vetaikaaran, while Kailash Kher effectively leads the pathos-soaked Alaalaa. Yuvan cooks up an arresting earthy fare in Sooriyarum Sooriyanum, a tune that would fit right in with Rahman's Aalaporan Thamizhan, backed by a superb chorus behind the mic. More rustic-EDM fusion follows in Sengarattan Paaraiyula, but is no less punchy in Ramani Ammal and Senthil Dass' exuberant vocals (in a way that reminded me of Adi Saamy from Thennavan), even as the lively Folk Instrumental emerges the soundtrack's best, not just for its foot-tapping rhythm, but also for its entrancing mix of nadaswaram, thavil, urumi and electronic elements that's sure to have you bobbing your head to its heady beat. Sandakozhi 2 may miss out on a melody like Dhavanipotta Deepavali, but Yuvan Shankar Raja, in his 2018 rebound, delivers a delightful folk package.
