Music Review: Oru Oorula Rendu Raja (Tamil)

Composer(s): D. Imman
Listen to the songs online here: Saavn

Haricharan and Vandana Srinivasan's compelling vocals make the Latino-styled Mazhakaatha a bouncy listen, while the title kuthu song is a superbly catchy Ilaiyaraaja-Yuvan Shankar Raja mix, the veena additions in the second charanam and singers Jayamoorthy and M. K. Balaji perfectly complementing Imman's trippy arrangements. Odum Rayilai marks the return of Abhay Jodhpurkar after Rummy's Adiye Enna Raagam and he is fantastic in his rendition of the composer's trademark melody. Shreya Ghoshal, now a Imman regular, is her usual saccharine sweet self in the wedding themed mappilla pattu Sundari Pennae. The orchestration and tune, though very Raja'ish, reminded me of Kizhakku Pookkum from the Malayalam film Anwar (Rahul Raj). Coincidentally, Shreya was the singer there as well. Actress Laksmi Menon's husky voice lends its unique charm to the addictive Kukkuru Kukkuru, the ektara-based folk arrangement being the song's highlight. D. Imman channels his inner Ilaiyaraaja to great effect in Oru Oorula Rendu Raja!
