Movie Review: Thegidi (Tamil)

As a mystery thriller, Thegidi (meaning dice) couldn't have been any more impressive. And the fact that debut director P. Ramesh never dumbs down the content makes it even more exciting. The story is about Vetri, who, after pursuing a course in M.A. Criminology, lands a job at a private detective agency as an investigator. He shadows his targets, gathers details about them while maintaining the thumb rule, which is to never get in contact with the subject. But when his next subject turns out to be Madhu, he crosses that line to find himself embroiled in a baffling conspiracy.

Crisp and delving straight to the heart of the matter without wasting time on unnecessary comedy tracks, song and dance routines, Thegidi keeps the viewer on tenterhooks and spices it with enough tension in the first act, which post interval leads to a thrilling (if predictable) pay-off. The romance is beautifully handled for a thriller, and I especially liked the scene where Vetri asks Madhu out for a coffee and she responds 'Lunch!?' Boasting of a praise-worthy performance from its ensemble cast and a pitch-perfect background score from Nivas K. Prasanna, Thegidi is gripping, taut and executed to perfection. A game well-played!
