Music Review: Ram-Leela (Hindi)

Composer(s): Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Film: Ram-Leela (aka Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela)

Ram Chahe Leela's intriguing folk-rock flourishes gain superb purchase from Bhoomi Trivedi's stupendous vocals. The garba-styled Lahu Munh Lag Gaya opens on an intriguing note, but the meandering tune gains immensely from Shail Hada and Osman Mir's vocals. Ang Laga De and the melancholic Poore Chand are seductive slow-burners, confidently led by Aditi Paul and Shail Hada (but perhaps a tad too slow for their own good?), while the dhol accompaniments in Nagada Sang Dhol, enlivens the traditional garba piece, with Shreya Ghoshal's spirited singing emerging a big plus. Arijit Singh does his job to the tee in the sedately arranged Laal Ishq, as does Ms. Ghoshal in Dhoop. If Udit Narayan Jr. manages to rise above the templatized Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun and Tattad Tattad, in Mor Bani Thanghat Kare, it's the tune's lovely folk flourishes that ultimately work in its favour. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela is adequately engrossing fusion of classical, folk as well as contemporary sounds, but also terribly inconsistent.
