Music Review: Kidaari (Tamil)

Keba Jeremiah's guitars are clearly the highlight of the hyper-energetic Tamil folk fusion Vandiyile Nellu Varum, and the midway melodious diversion, sung by Sanjana Kalmanje, sounds amazingly good. Sanjana gets to sing the beautifully tuned melody Nenjukkulla Ninnu Kittu as well, the assortment of kanjeera, flute and guitars lending the song a lovely rustic tilt. Thalakaalu Puriyalaiyae is a fusion all right, but a fantastic one at that, thanks to its perky brass-guitar mix that belies its serene intro; not to mention Anitha and Velmurugan's pitch-perfect rendition! The brass features prominently in its other short, string'y variant Kaathu Veesudhu Kaathu, with a trifecta of haunting, moody compositions Vettaruva Veecharuva, Pagaivanukku Arulvaai (featuring fabulous vocals from Haricharan), and Velivarum Ulmugam (a strings-heavy instrumental) rounding off the soundtrack on an ominous note. Darbuka Siva's Kidaari is a refreshing, welcome respite from the kind of Tamil film music we have been hearing this year thus far!
