Music Briefs: 9, June, Kumbalangi Nights, Maleyondige, Ondalla Eradalla, Oru Adaar Love, Swartharatna, Thadam & Yajamana
A quick take on the latest music from Arun Raj, Sushin Shyam, Shaan Rahman, Ifthikarali Azeez, V. Harikrishna and more...
Thadam - Inayae's stunner of a melody tuned by Arun Raj and effortlessly rendered by Sid Sriram and Padmalatha, but it's Adithya's flute that emerges the song's highlight.
Kumbalangi Nights - Coming off last year's highs Maradona and Varathan, composer Sushin Shyam delivers an equally spellbinding work with Kumbalangi Nights. Be it the gentle strings-driven Cherathukal and Ezhutha Kadha (that soaring chorus!), or the captivating synth-laced Uyiril Thodum, or the dreamy Silent Cat sung by German R&B singer K.Zia, Shyam nails an aesthetic that's simply impossible not to like. Easily his best work to date!
9 - Shaan Rahman spins a breezy EDM-tinged qawwali fusion in Akale and it all works so seamlessly!
Oru Adaar Love - One listen to Manikya Malaraya Poovi, and you would be given to thinking it's a follow-up to Akale (aforementioned). Not only the two songs occupy a similar sonic space, Shaan Rahman bedecks the melody with a serene guitar'y arrangement that's oh-so-lovely. Not to mention, Vineeth Sreenivasan who does an admirable job crooning it. Maahiya is another easy standout, with Rahman expanding on his signature sounds to ear-pleasing effect.
June - Minni Minni recalls Bharadwaj's Unnodu Vaazha (Amarkalam), in a good way that is, while Sooraj Santhosh, Gowry Lekshmi and Bindu Anirudhan lend solid vocal purchase to the splendorous melodies Adyam Thammil, Uyarum and Koodu Vittu. Ifthikarali Azeez, in his film debut, turns in a delectable musical fare.
Maleyondige - Subhash Jayadev captures the rain motif so beautifully in Malegaala Bandagide, aided spectacularly by Chethan Naik’s vocals.
Yajamana - Dil Dooba, Pyar Ki Ek Kahani, Main Agar Kahoon, Shukran Allah and many duets later, there is something when Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal come together. And composer V. Harikrishna puts it to the best use in Ondu Munjane.
Ondalla Eradalla - A soundtrack from 2018 that I missed, but as a predecessor to to Sarkari..., Vasuki Vaibhav's output here is much more thematic. And clocking under 10 minutes, I must say it's a little too short to qualify as a full-fledged soundtrack. But Nammoru Thamooru, with its subtle folk touches, is splendid, as is the kids chorus Haadalu.
Swartharatna - Another Kannada soundtrack that I gave a miss last year. Suffice to say, Bharath BJ makes a noteworthy debut, with Ee Jeeva Kareyole riding on Armaan Malik's dependably fabulous vocals, even as Mohan Krishna leads the sitar-laden retro-styled Nin Nayana flawlessly.
