Heavy Rotation: Jay Som, Maxwell, Strange Relations & More

Some of my recent listens from Beck, Mai Lan, Gerald Maxwell Rivera and more...

Whatever, Wherever (Band of Horses) - A lovely guitary melody, complemented very well by a heart-felt rendition from frontman Ben Bridwell.

Wow (Beck) - Beck released the energetic Dreams last June, and he is following it up, an year later, with an alt hip-hop production called Wow. It's a passably fun listen while it lasts, but those flute-loops remind me a little of Nicki Minaj's Feeling Myself.

I Think You're Alright (Jay Som) - In which Melina Duterte, better known in music circles as Jay Som, conjures a fuzzy longing melody about a one-sided romance. If you are into Mitski, Jay Som should be right up in your alley.

Technique (Mai Lan) - The funky song has me hooked, and you should catch the video too (via Pitchfork), if you haven't already. It's crazy, not to mention robotic!

1990X (Maxwell) - A slinky smooth neo-soul offering from Maxwell's upcoming album BlackSUMMERS'night that's dreamy and oh-so-gentle. Now I think I know where Christopher Gallant comes from!

I Took a Pill in Ibiza (Mike Posner) (Stars cover) - Canadian indie-pop outfit Stars give Mike Posner's soft-EDM number (originally an acoustic ballad) a shimmery synthy transformation, and it's everything.

Needed Me (Cosmic Dawn Club Mix) (Rihanna) - Norway-based remix artist Cosmic Dawn's thumping take on Rihanna's Needed Me is the electric club banger that's been largely missing from her ANTI album.

Ceremonies (Strange Relations) - Shoegaze is what I love and Strange Relations' Ceremonies perfectly fits the bill.
