Music Review: Marina
The opening track Vanakkam Chennai (Mukesh, Shilpa et al.), carrying an interesting tune, pays a well-deserved ode to Singara Chennai that juxtaposes the city's good and bad. Haricharan excels in Kadhal Oru, which strikingly expresses the emotional tumult of falling in love. Yelelo, sung in his trademark style by Benny Dayal along with Sandhya and Andrea Jeremiah, is completely mesmerizing; its chorus employed to mesmerising effect, while Vijay Prakash does complete justice to the soul-stirring track Nanban.
The Marina Theme (Madras Youth Choir, Manasi, Monissha) is quite well-composed and its equally well-orchestrated lyrical version Marina Marina, sung by the composer himself and Sathyaprakash Sooraj, works much better (many thanks to composer G. Girishh for pointing this out!). But the soundtrack's high point is Life in Marina, a captivating instrumental piece set to tune with able support from Kabuli (guitar), H. N. Bhaskar (violin) and Vishnu (flute). Marina a spell-binding debut by G. Girishh.
