Music Review: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Hindi)

Composer(s): Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Film: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Daler Mehndi opens the simple and effective Gurbani with his resounding rendition. The anthemic Zinda might sound like your typical rock number, but is nevertheless mighty infectious and Siddharth Mahadevan's enthusiastic vocals are a perfect fit. Mera Yaar is just fantastic in every conceivable way; be it Javed Bashir's singing, or the composers' imaginative folk arrangements, this one is thoroughly ear-pleasing. In a refreshing change, the titular song Bhaag Milkha Bhaag gets a minimalist treatment amidst a Punjabi-folk backdrop and it works very well. Arif Lohar too does a great job behind the mic. Its rock variant, sung by Siddharth Mahadevan, features a more rousing arrangement but loses authenticity in the process.

Maston Ka Jhund, despite a great job by Divya Kumar, is passably engaging and that's about it. A gorgeous mix of western and Indian folk, Slow Motion Angreza is simply mesmerizing and the chorus portions are a hoot, with singers Sukhwinder Singh and Loy Mendosa aptly capturing the exuberance required for the lively track. O Rangrez is a musical bliss, its serene and free-flowing classical tune being the highlight. The use of sarangi and tabla along with Shreya Ghoshal and Javed Bashir's first-rate performances are enough to make you fall in love with this haunting composition. The trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy continue their admirable run with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. A job well done!
