Music Review: Thalaivaa (Tamil)

Composer(s): G. V. Prakash Kumar
Film: Thalaivaa

Tamil Pasanga's (Benny Dayal, Sheezay, Psycho Unit) hip-hop rap mix is strictly average, and the excessive auto-tuning doesn't help either. Sol Sol (Vijay Prakash, Abhay Jodhpurkar, Megha) feels quite staid, and so is the case with the title song (Haricharan, Pooja Vaidyanath, Zia Ulhaq) that seems to be aimed straight at Vijay fans! As always, the composer reserves the best for himself and Saindhavi with the melodious and Irish folk inspired Yaar Indha Saalai Oram. Its instrumental version The Ecstasy of Dance is in fact a much better listen thanks to its mind-blowing orchestration. Alcohol-induced heartbreak songs have been a craze these days, and Vanganna Vanakanganna is no different. I just sometimes wonder why did Kolaveri Di even happen! It's beginning to get tiresome. But to give credit where it's due, actors Vijay and Santhanam perform their parts to perfection. For a first time G. V. Prakash-Vijay collaboration, Thalaivaa is disappointing!
