S. Thaman had quite an eventful 2018, churning out an assortment of gorgeous melodies across Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, and if his latest outing Mr. Majnu is any indication, 2019 appears to be something to look forward to. For the album is so breezy and solid fun, packed with snazzy tunes and captivating arrangements, while dialling down the auto-tune that he is infamous for. The title song is a stunningly constructed joyous outburst of a synth-coated dance number effortlessly sung by Ramya NSK, while the folky Chiru Chiru Navvula, moulded along the lines of Yuvan's Adada Mazhaida (Paiyaa), packs in a lovely blend of nadaswaram, strings and foot-tapping percussion that's well-complemented by Tushar Joshi and Ramya Behara's sprightly rendition. The strings make their presence felt in Naalo Neeku, a lilting melody rendered to perfection by Shreya Ghoshal, and more so in the entrancing Sruthi Ranjani-sung Hey Nenila, even as Armaan Malik makes an appearance, not in one, but two songs: Yemainado and Koppamga Koppamga, the former working beautifully as a gentle strings-laden melody, and the latter's groovy guitar backdrop (Aalaap Raju) providing a lovely counterpoint to his vocals. Mr. Majnu is an exceedingly, resoundingly fine soundtrack from Thaman.
