Music Review: Nautanki Saala (Hindi)

Composer(s): Ayushmann Khurrana, Falak Shabir, Mikey McCleary, Rashid Khan, Rochak Kohli
Film: Nautanki Saala

Falak Shabir's Mera Mann Kehne Laga has that arresting yesteryear charm that makes you fall in love with the track in the very first listen! Its Reprise version aside, the other two variants are barely functional at best. The Pani Da Rang combo of Ayushmann Khurrana and Rochak Kohli come back again with a similar guitar-backed Saadi Galli Aaja and like the former, this one works well (if not better). Neeti Mohan gives Ayushmann a fantastic vocal support and in fact gets more opportunity in its Unplugged version. Mikey McCleary does a masterclass in remixing Beta's Dhak Dhak and the singers too pull off a great job of the singing.

Tu Hi Tu (Ayushmann Khurrana), characterized by a breezy free-flowing tune, is just splendid while Geet Sagar's spritely rendition of the reggae-based Draamebaaz is its high point. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan saves the plaintive and templatized Sapna Mera Toota (Rashid Khan) to a large extent as Saba Azad's flawless singing comes to the fore in the admirably retro'ish Dil Ki Toh Lag Gayi. McCleary's second cover of Tezaab's So Gaya Yeh Jahan retains Nitin Mukesh's vocals and adds his own touches to great effect. Nautanki Saala is an eclectic mix and thoroughly enjoyable; and yes it's McCleary's show all the way!
