Music Review: Raavana Kottam (Tamil)
Composer(s): Justin Prabhakaran

It Athu But Aanaal is a delightful nod to early Rahman sounds, and is by turn groovy and catchy complete with an unexpected sonic twist in the second interlude that blends operatic flourishes with kulavai sounds (ululation in English). Justin Prabhakaran progressively adds eerie, inventive layers to Maayamma, before it escalates into a searing, full-blown rap-folk fusion. Raavana Kottathula is sprightly, complemented well by a zippy hook and Diwakar's phenomenal singing (He almost sounds like Shankar Mahadevan!). Anthony Daasan and Madurai Chandran pour their heart out in the appositely sombre and fiery dirge Thala Saanjuruche, unloading a dense emotional outpouring. Athana Per Mathiyila is where it all comes together so beautifully, with Yazin Nizar and Vandana Srinivasan sharing a terrific vocal chemistry, even as Prabhakaran infuses the lilting folky melody with pleasant modern stylings. With Raavana Kottam, Justin Prabhakaran delivers an engaging potpourri of tunes.
