Listen: Lady Gaga's "911"

Chromatica is Lady Gaga's big return to the big, colourful pop music that catapulted her to success with The Fame and The Fame Monster a decade go. It's neony dance-pop filled with joyous, top drawer bangers, even if some parts of it float by without registering much of an impression, lost in a sea of generic hooks that, while catchy, lack fizz and don't amount to much. Thankfully, the highs are thrilling. The Ariana Grande collaboration Rain on Me is euphoric, and the one with Elton John, Sine From Above, is an unstoppable endomorphine rush. But where she comes full circle is in 911. Sonically mining the same territory as her earlier efforts, the track is pulsatingly groovy and dancey electro-pop at its finest, layering her strident vocals against a swirl of brooding synthetic beats.
