Music Review: Leelai
Sung vivaciously by Sunitha Sarathy, Benny Dayal and Suvi, Taxi Taxi-styled Bubble Gum is a rollicking listen. The rap portions are just admirably sung and the lyrics work well too. Jilendru Oru Kalavaram has a simple arrangement that brings to mind Ennai Kaanavillaiye, but manages to sustain listener's interest, thanks to the composer's pitch perfect vocal support. Despite its passing resemblance to Harris Jayaraj's Enadhuyire, Oru Kili Oru Kili (and its piano/strings-laden reprise version) is a beautiful melody - notably the charanam portions with its brilliant tabla usage. Ponmalai exudes an exuberant feel and Benny Dayal's vocals touch the right chord, while Haricharan is adequate in the pathos soaked Unnai Partha Pinbhu. There may not be anything dramatically new on offer, but A. R. Rahman's assistant Satish Chakravarthy makes an ear-pleasing debut.
