Music Review: Rudhramadevi (Telugu)

Composer(s): Ilaiyaraaja

It's always a pleasure listening to SPB and he joins hands with Kailash Kher and Chithra for the opulent-sounding Matthagajame. The elaborate use of strings, percussion and resounding trombones in the arrangements accentuates the song's period feel, and the chorus and folky excursions add to its celebratory mood. Auna Neevena is nothing short of a musical bliss (God, those violins!), and Ilaiyaraaja ropes in a sweet-sounding Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam to croon the enchanting melody.

A flawless rendition by Chithra is Choosukovo Teesukovo's highpoint, with the singer inflecting her vocals with the right amount of fun, but the tune on the whole falls flat. The classic Ilaiyaraaja melody Punnami Puvvai gets superb purchase in Shreya Ghoshal, and she nails it with her impeccable vocals. SPB's fiery singing powers the functional Allakallolamai, but Anthapuramlo boasts of a superb vocal harmony between Chithra, Sadhana Sargam and Chinmayi, the predominant string-based arrangement once again sporting the highlight. Rudhramadevi sees composer Ilaiyaraaja in fine mettle.

  1. I'm totally aghast that a movie like this needs an item song. And I really didn't think that roping in Chitra was a clever choice. My pick from this album would be Auna Neevenaa (yes, those violins are heavenly!) :)
