Music Review: Nila Choru (Tamil)

Composer(s): Ilaiyaraaja
Film: Nila Choru

With a very Carnatic base, Kaalaiyile Maalai Vanthathu is a splendorous listen bolstered by first rate singing from Saptaparna Chakraborty. The choice of instruments like veena and nadaswaram superbly fit in with the synth elements Raja usually employs. Nandri Solla vendum is sheer bliss and sees a fabulous arrangement (that flute in the backgrounds!), and equally brilliant is the rendition by P. Karthi and Priyadarshini. Ilaiyaraaja's coarse vocals power the interestingly orchestrated Ungappan Pera Solli, which works well despite all the déjà vu. Haricharan is stupendous in the mesmerizing synth-coated melody Kallaale Senju Vacha, while Priyadarshini does an adequate job of the same song in its female version. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, on the whole, weaves his magic once again in Nila Choru!
