Book Review: Gone Tomorrow

Gone Tomorrow
Who is Jack Reacher? It's a question that needs asking even after all these years. Yes, he is a drifter, a former Major and a relentless civilian vigilante. But it's also about his unique lifestyle choices and his ability to read a situation and sort out any problem no matter how big (and ridiculous) the odds stacked against him turn out to be. Taken in this context, Gone Tomorrow is an engrossing read packed with action, wit and thrills. Thus what opens a harmless ride on the New York City subway takes a mystifying turn when one of the passengers commits suicide right before his eyes, leading him to investigate the matter even as his own life is put in danger. With switchback plotting and frictionless prose, Lee Child crafts a supercharged thriller, while Reacher continues to remain as enigmatic and larger-than-life as ever, charming his way to our hearts and indulging in technophobic discourses (Now everyone carries small electronic devices named after fruits or trees, he says referring to BlackBerrys and Apple iPhones) that are a pleasure to read through.
